so its abusive to eat a horse but a cow is perfectly fine?would you eat horse?
i seen a commercial for the aspca todayit showed poor beaten abused animals then it showed a horse and was like this horse will be killed for its meat? excuse me to some of us a horse is food its no more abusive than killing a cow or chicken. We eat horse in japan all the time its something I look forward to when going bakc home
Mike how uneducated can you be Japanese citizens are more wealthy on average than americans
This really boils down to a cultural question because it is all based on what foods you grow up eating and get accustomed to seeing as food. In Asia, many people eat cat, dog, horse, and other "pets" that those of us in the west would never dream of eating. In the USA we have guinea pigs as pets, whereas in South America this is a delicacy.
I grew up mainly in a larger city in Ohio, and I only eat chicken, beef, and some pork, while I have friends who eat deer, rabbit, squirrel, possum, and 'coon (raccoon), which I could never eat. I have tried deer, it is too sweet tasting for me and I don't like it.
In Louisiana they eat craw-fish, which I could never eat. I also do not eat seafood of any kind such as crab, lobster, shrimp, scallops, or even tuna. I know what these things look like alive and I can't eat them now that they're dead. They are disgusting and it makes me gag to think of ingesting them. My husband, on the other hand, loves all this seafood and eats it as often as he is able to. People eat snake, gator (alligator) and eel, which I wouldn't touch for a million dollars! So disgusting to even imagine eating this stuff! So horse is not the only food many people have an aversion to! I am not saying it is wrong to eat any of the foods I listed, I am saying I can't eat these foods as I have an aversion to eating them. I have never tried any of it except for the deer, and I could eat deer if I was starving, but I would have a hard time eating other meats as I would gag.
I bought some rabbit (domestic) back in 1982 and fried it up like chicken. It looked good, a lot whiter than chicken, and it did not taste bad, but I had a gag reflex with each bite and barely got 2-3 bites down before I just chucked the entire plate of food in the trash! I had tried to hide this reaction, did not tell my two young kids what it was (told them it was chicken, they were 7 and 4) and they somehow knew it was not chicken and wouldn't eat it either!), we ended up tossing it in the trash and we ate breakfast foods for dinner that night.
I just happen to have a lot of food prejudices, for lack of a better word. And I cannot eat foods I was not raised to eat. We always had beef, chicken, and pork growing up, though when I was younger (teens and below) I would eat a fish fillet once in awhile and tuna salad. In my 20's my taste buds changed and I haven't eaten them since (I am now 49). I will not go back to even trying tuna because of the mercury levels.
I know people who will eat horse and just about any other kind of animal flesh you want to give them; I just can't. Also, many people have horses as pets and they could never imagine eating their pets, which is how they view horses, in general. I don't think it is abusive to kill animals for food if it is done humanely, but so many people are raised in cities and have no clue where or how their meat gets to them, therefore, they are far removed from the process of butchering, and that is why you have so many people turning to vegetariansim, they have this odd belief that animals are as worthy as humans instead of seeing animals for the food source they are. Many people don't even have an idea of how a tomato is grown or where their foods come from period. Many people are only aware of the sanitized grocery stores where everything is nicely cleaned and packaged and they've no idea the work that goes into growing food.
I don't think you will find many people in the USA will want to eat horse meat, but remember, you were raised in a culture where this is permissable and normal, whereas here it is not normal or permissable. Old horses killed for meat in the USA end up as canned dog food and in glue factories (hoofs), not in butcher shops or restaurant menus.
I am not judging you one way or the other as I really don't care what others choose to eat, I just don't want to have to eat most of it myself! But I do love a good rib eye beef steak, chicken breasts, and bacon! I hope I have answered your question satisfactorily.
